Free Westerns Online

As more and more books become freely available online, more specialized websites are being born, dedicated to specific genres and periods. While some of them sadly face an early demise—such as LookyBook.com, one of the best free picture book sites ever made—many others remain, here for us to peruse and play on each and every day.

If Western books are your cup of tea, you’re in luck; there are plenty of sources for free Western books online. Here are just a few of them for your reading pleasure.

The Free Western Novels Download Directory features a fair selection of novels. Classics like The Call of the Wild, The Virginian, The Red Badge of Courage, and The Life and Adventures of Calamity Jane are available here, as well as humorous and romantic books like I Married a Ranger.

At Arthur’s Classic Novels, you can find works by Edward S. Ellis, Joseph A. Altsheler, and many other authors. The books at this site are free to read and no registration is required, but with entire books on one webpage, scrolling down can become tiresome on your eyes—and losing your place can be easy to do as well.

Free Online Novels has a similar layout and works in the same way, without registration. Neither sites require downloading, as all of the books are housed on different web pages.

Tome Raider has a handful of Westerns available for free download.

Public Bookshelf is a good source for free Westerns if you like your novel to have some romance as well. This format may be the most user-friendly, as not only do you not have to download anything—but the books themselves are in a turn-the-page format. Once you finish reading a page, you just click the arrow at the bottom (or top) of the page and go to the next one, so you don’t lose your place. This is also very helpful in coming back to the story later if you have to bookmark it for a break.

They have about fifty books in their free listings, including works by Honore Willsie Morrow, B.M. Bower and others. There’s also a fun rating feature to use after you finish reading.

eHarlequin also occasionally offers free Western romance novels to download, usually out of the Harlequin Historical series. Their copies generally require some software in order to open them, such as Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft eBook, and Mobipocket eBook.
